We are advancing into a future that is taking new shape every day. What are the dynamics that will shape the World of tomorrow? The emerging paradigm in the evolution of technology indicates a futurescape built from ubiquitous computing, sensor networks and cyberphyscial systems which collectively will lay the foundation for a Smart Society. The Intelligent societies of the future will be a constellation of intelligent codes, algorithms and protocols adpating to an ever shifting global ecosystem.
Codes are used to convey multilayered complex information and also refer to information that programmers use to direct the flow of electricity through a computer network. Algorithms are a finite sequence of well-defined, computer-implementable instructions, typically to solve a class of problems or to perform a computation. While Protocols refer to a set of activities arranged in a specific sequence and when activated, generates a response. The core elements of tomorrow's smart society are codes (multilayered complex information), Algorithms (formulas for computation) and Protocols (rules of interaction).
The intelligent societies of the future can be visualized as a constellation of these three elements layered within each other. These elements are considered interconnected because they affect each other simultaneously and are built upon each layer of the constellation. Smart Infrastructure establishes the broadband and wireless connectivity to all citizens, while Smart Grid energy technologies provide the electricity necessary to power the ubiquitous electronics of the cyberphyscial ecosystem as a whole. Smart Mobility enables the coordination of goods and logistics across cities while GPS tracking and location data allows these services to reach their destination.
Codes form a key element of the constellation because the future will be an era of ubiquitous computing which allows everything from buildings, cars, planes, and trains to become smart. Codes are programmed into these systems to process high volumes of information and interface with each other with very low latency. Smart systems in this context refers to technologies with sensing capabilities and are responsive to human needs and can "think" proactively to make life more efficient for citizens. The integration of multidisciplinary technologies would evolve into a virtualized cloud network or an "Internet of Things". This "IOT" displays an integrated cognitive architecture of trillions of connected devices, resembling the neurons within a neural network, or a "Global Brain".
Algorithms will be used for nearly everything in the future, from information routing and processing to GPS data, mobility, construction, security and every layer of the social infrastructure. New algorithms will continue to be developed in the future in order to address the increasing sophistication of the requirements of tomorrows smart societies. Many of the future algorithms will be used to develop machine learning and Artificial Intelligence systems that can go through huge amounts of data and gain insights, while "thinking" with a high degree of autonomy.
The intelligent protocols of the future will need to be able to integrate sets of technologies together in order to maintain a coherent global society. These smart protocols will govern the distribution of energy in smart grids, the spatial distribution of aircraft in the skies, the vertical elevation of skyscrapers and all key elements of society at large. The emergence of Global computing networks and the trillions of devices connected to these networks will require an advanced constellation of codes, algorithms and protocols, which collectively will form the foundation of tomorrow's Smart Society.
